Complete Review for the ABFM Self Assessment Modules for the year 2009
The profession of Family Medicine is changing, and the organizations that establish and maintain certification requirements are making it ever tougher to stay in the game. That's right, the recertification exam is getting more demanding, what with all the new attention to evidence-based medicine (EBM). And then, the annual maintenance of certification (MC-FP) Self Assessment Module (SAM) requires you to devote precious hours of your time to ensure that you are up-to-date on the standard of care for all the major clinical categories in your practice environment. This annual challenge also requires you to register for and pass a demanding test on the SAM material.
Each year, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) identifies two Self Assessment Modules (SAMs), and eventually will have 12 SAMs altogether; family physicians who are recertifying in the future are required to complete and pass tests on six of the twelve SAMs as part of their Maintenance of Certification (MC-FP). These new tests are very challenging -- the passing grade is 90%!! Most physicians don't pass on their first attempt. And these Maintenance of Certification tests are required in addition to periodic recertification exams. That's where we come in!
